Others get into bed but cannot quiet their mind. Some wake repeatedly during the night, while others sleep for many hours and still wake feeling tired.

ADHD can be associated with difficulties falling asleep, staying asleep, waking up, and maintaining a regular sleep-wake rhythm. Poor sleep can then make attention, concentration, emotional regulation, and other ADHD challenges even harder the following day.

What is important to understand is that there is no single sleep strategy that works for every person with ADHD. In my coaching practice, I do not begin with a long list of rules. I start by helping clients understand their own patterns and what may be keeping their mind and nervous system activated.

We Begin With Awareness, Not Judgment

One of the first things I explore with a client is what happens before, during, and after sleep. What time do they intend to go to bed? What time do they go to bed? What happens in between? Are they working, scrolling, watching something, or finally enjoying the first quiet moment of the day?

We may track bedtime, wake time, how long it takes to fall asleep, nighttime awakenings, naps, caffeine, light, noise, and other factors. The purpose is not to judge the routine, but to make patterns visible.

In coaching, I am especially interested in what is underneath the behaviour. Staying up late may look like a sleep problem, but sometimes it is a time-management challenge, an executive-function difficulty, or a need to reclaim quiet personal time after a demanding day.

We Work With the ADHD Brain Rather Than Against It

For many people with ADHD, simply saying, ‘I need to go to bed earlier,’ does not create change. Time blindness, difficulty disengaging from an interesting activity, trouble transitioning between states, or a burst of energy late in the evening can all interfere.

Rather than relying on willpower alone, we create external supports. That may mean setting an alarm for the beginning of the bedtime routine, not just for bedtime. It may also mean breaking the transition into small steps: closing the computer, preparing for the next day, dimming the lights, changing into sleepwear, and gradually shifting into a quieter state.

The goal is to help the brain recognize: the active part of the day is ending.

When the Mind Will Not Stop, I Give It Something Else to Do

“My body is tired, but my mind won’t stop.”

One of the most common things my clients tell me is that their body is tired, but their mind will not stop.

Trying to force the mind to become completely empty can create more frustration. Instead, I often use mindfulness practices that give attention a gentle place to go.

One of the practices I teach is the body scan meditation. Rather than remaining caught in repetitive thoughts, the person progressively brings attention to different parts of the body – the feet, legs, abdomen, chest, shoulders, face, and so on.

The intention is not to force sleep. It is to shift attention away from repetitive thinking and toward direct bodily sensations. In a sense, we give the mind something neutral and grounding to do.

I also provide some clients with meditation recordings that I have created. When they are already tired, they do not have to remember the steps or decide what to do; they can simply listen and follow the guidance. For an ADHD brain, reducing the number of decisions required at bedtime can itself be helpful.

We Also Work With the Body and Nervous System

Sleep is not only a mental process. Sometimes the mind may want to rest, but the body is still in a state of activation.

This is where I often integrate tools from HeartMath. One of the practices I teach is Heart-Focused Breathing: bringing attention to the area of the heart while breathing slowly and comfortably.

The purpose is to support a shift toward greater physiological calm and relaxation. Rather than fighting with thoughts, we can sometimes work through the body first.

For some clients, combining Heart-Focused Breathing with a mindfulness body scan is particularly helpful: the breathing supports physical settling, while the body scan gives the mind a gentle point of focus.

We Look at the Whole Day, Not Just Bedtime

A sleep problem does not always begin at 10:00 p.m. Sometimes it begins much earlier in the day.

If someone struggles with task initiation, work may get pushed into the evening. If they underestimate how long tasks will take, bedtime gets delayed. If the entire day has been filled with obligations, nighttime may become the only period that feels personally theirs.

This is why ADHD coaching can be so relevant to sleep. Sometimes improving sleep requires work on planning, transitions, boundaries, emotional regulation, and time awareness during the day, rather than concentrating only on what happens in the bedroom.

Daytime movement and exposure to natural light can also support a healthier sleep-wake rhythm.

We Experiment Rather Than Search for the Perfect Routine

I tell my clients that we are conducting an experiment. We may introduce one or two changes rather than ten.

Perhaps we add a wind-down alarm. Perhaps we move the phone away from the bed. Perhaps we introduce five minutes of Heart-Focused Breathing. Perhaps we use a guided body scan.

Then we observe: Did it help? Was it realistic? What got in the way? What needs to be modified?

Each ADHD brain is different. A strategy that works beautifully for one person may be ineffective or unrealistic for another. Coaching therefore becomes a process of observation, experimentation, adjustment, and repetition.

Medication, Melatonin, and Sleep Deserve Individual Attention

Medication can also influence sleep. For some people with ADHD, the timing or dosage of stimulant medication may affect their ability to fall asleep, while adequately treating ADHD symptoms may make evenings easier to manage. Medication questions should always be discussed with the prescribing healthcare professional.

Some of my clients also use melatonin, in consultation with their healthcare provider. Melatonin is a hormone involved in signalling the body’s sleep-wake cycle rather than simply a conventional sleeping pill.

Different formulations serve different purposes. For some people who have difficulty staying asleep, a prolonged- or extended-release formulation may be considered, whereas immediate-release melatonin may be used differently. The appropriate formulation, dose, and timing should be discussed with a physician or pharmacist because it is not the same for everyone.

Sometimes It Is More Than ADHD

Not every sleep difficulty should automatically be attributed to ADHD.

Persistent snoring pauses in breathing, severe daytime exhaustion, unusual movements during sleep, or waking repeatedly despite adequate sleep may indicate another sleep disorder. A medical assessment or sleep study may be appropriate when conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea are suspected.

Sleep Is Highly Individual

When I work with clients experiencing ADHD and sleep difficulties, my objective is not to give them the ‘perfect sleep routine.’ It is to help them discover what their brain and body need to move from activation into rest.

For one person, the most effective tool may be better time management. For another, it may be learning how to disengage from stimulating activities. For someone else, it may be a mindfulness body scan, Heart-Focused Breathing, or listening to a guided meditation when repetitive thoughts appear. And often, it is a combination.

The most sustainable approach is usually not forcing ourselves to sleep better. It is creating the conditions that make sleep more possible.

Source note: This article was informed in part by ADDitude’s Sleeping Better with ADHD: An ADDitude Guide for Adults, together with my own coaching approach and the practices I use with clients.

Important: This article is for educational purposes and is not a substitute for medical advice.
