You Have ADHD and You Are Still Waiting to start your tax return?
We’re Going to Break the Cycle. Now.
Breathe. If your tax return has not being started yet, it is not a lack of willpower. It is not a character flaw. It is not laziness. It’s neurological.
The ADHD brain struggles to emotionally remember past consequences. You remember the stress intellectually. You remember the penalties. But today, your nervous system does not feel the urgency.
Without emotional activation, there is no behavioral activation.
The ADHD brain runs on “now”. So, we are going to create a “now”.
Step 1 – Open Your Calendar
Find a 50-minute block. Not perfect. Just available. Schedule it immediately.
Write: “Taxes – Body Double – 50 Minutes.” This is not an intention. It is a commitment.
Step 2 – Find Your Body Double
A body double activates your brain. Human presence increases engagement, reduces avoidance, and supports self-regulation.
Send this message: “Can you be my body double today for 50 minutes?”
Step 3 – Create Immediate Accountability
Choose an immediate consequence if you don’t show up: Buy someone coffee, send a money transfer, treat someone to dinner… The ADHD brain responds to immediate consequences. Not next month. Now.
Step 4 – Activate Dopamine
Choose a short-term reward after the 50 minutes block: a special coffee, a walk, a guilt-free show, a personal break.
Short-term rewards activate the dopaminergic system.
Now that you have activated your brain… Visualize yourself submitting your tax return. Click “Submit.” Take a deep breath. Feel the relief. Feel the lightness. Feel the pride. And now… celebrate. A good meal. Time with someone you love. A well-earned pause. That is self-regulation: moving from avoidance to mastery.
